Distance Reduction: Slope to Horizontal to Grid
Summary
A total station measures a slope distance. Surveys on a map projection need the grid distance: first reduce slope to horizontal with the zenith angle, then to the ellipsoid with the elevation factor R/(R + h), then to the grid with the point scale factor k. The product of the last two is the combined scale factor.
Definition
Combined scale factor: the product of the elevation (height) factor and the grid scale factor, converting ground distances to grid distances.
- HD = SD·sin(Z)
- Elevation factor = R/(R + h)
- Grid = Ellipsoid × k
- CSF = EF × k
Step 1: slope to horizontal
Apply prism constant and atmospheric correction to SD first.
Step 2: horizontal to ellipsoid
R ≈ 6 371 000 m and h is the mean ellipsoidal height of the line (orthometric height plus geoid separation).
Step 3: ellipsoid to grid
k is the point scale factor of the projection, available for any point from GeoCAD Bridge’s Coordinate Transformation output. For UTM, k is 0.9996 on the central meridian and about 1.0010 near zone edges at the equator.
Worked example
A 1 000.000 m horizontal distance measured at h = 600 m, at a point where UTM k = 0.999 950:
FAQ
Do I need to reduce distances for small sites?
If your control is on UTM or another national grid, yes: a 100 mm per km scale difference is common and will show up as misclosure in link traverses.
What height should I use in the elevation factor?
The ellipsoidal height. If you only have orthometric height, add the geoid separation N from a geoid model.
